Thanksgiving 2017
Here in the US, it is Thanksgiving eve and I am fortunate to enjoy some time off from work this week. I have been catching up on chores around the house while relaxing, which has been a nice change. I’ve also been thinking about Thanksgiving and the meaning behind the holiday. I am thankful for the home my family and I live in, having good friends to share good times with and the good health of my family and friends. I also enjoy seeing posts from others who are recognizing and being thankful for the people and prosperity in their life.
In past years, recognizing the abundance in my life has been enough but for some reason this year it feels like I should do more than just be thankful. Part of this self reflection is because of what I’ve learned about the hardships others are going through, another part is due to the natural disasters that have affected others over the last year. Another part of me wonders why my family and I have this life when so many others are struggling and hopes our good fortune continues. But most of all, I wonder if there are actions I can take to help others who do not have as much as we do.
Just donating money seems somewhat empty, although I know it can be very helpful. But I feel like some more is needed and this led me to think about the idea of service, of giving of myself in aid of others. I find myself reviewing my current life and looking for ways to reach out to others to offer a hand to help. I am exploring options but it seem slow at times, even though I can see I am making some progress towards my goals. In the end, I am very thankful for time this week to pause my life, look at what I’m doing and appreciate the progress I’ve made while looking for ways to continue moving my life forward.
For people in the US, Happy Thanksgiving! For those elsewhere, have a good weekend.
